What is a statute of limitations?
A statute of limitations is the length of time a civil or criminal case can be brought to court. Basically, that means after something happens, you only have a certain number of days to file a complaint. In Tennessee, there are many different statutes of limitations for different types of cases. For example, if you’ve been in a car accident and want to file a personal injury claim, you have 1 year to do so. Here are some other common claims and their statute of limitations:
· Breach of Contract: 6 years
· Malpractice: 1 year
· Workers Compensation: 1 year
· Sexual Abuse: 1 year

Divorces are often stressful for couples who may be uncertain about the future of their financial situation and the custody of their children. In Tennessee, couples are required to go through mediation before they go to trial for a divorce.
