Felony Classifications & Penalties in Tennessee

In Tennessee, a felony is any crime punishable by a year or more in prison. Examples include robbery, burglary, theft of property valued at over $1,000, DUI causing serious injury or death, drug possession with intent to sell, drug manufacturing, aggravated assault, manslaughter, attempted murder, and murder. In addition to imprisonment, felony penalties may include significant fines.

According to Tennessee Ann. Code § 40-35-111, the following penalties apply for felonies:

  • Capital offense: punishable by death or life imprisonment
  • Class A felony: punishable by 15 - 60 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000
  • Class B felony: punishable by 8 - 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000
  • Class C felony: punishable by 3 - 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000
  • Class D felony: punishable by 2 - 12 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000
  • Class E felony: punishable by 1 - 6 years in prison and a fine of up to $3,000
